Multiuser Design and ArchitectureThere is an old saying, "when your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Most people have spent their entire computer career using PCs or Macs, which are single user systems. When many people need access to information, a common way to do it is to have a central person who keeps track of the information on a computer and others just ask him or her for information. Just think of all the things that are useful for everyone in your organization to have access to. At InfoPoint, we created a simple Web based contact manager that allows our customer support to type information on contacts, instantly making it available to our whole organization. We can access it from anywhere there is Internet access with no complicated downloading or copying files. It has exactly the information we need and not matter how many people use it, it never costs us more. The basic concept is that instead of having many computer programs and the associated data on each computer, the programs and data live on a central computer and are accessed by individual computers. Since the data is kept in one place, everyone sees the same thing. A person can update contact information, schedules, calendar information or anything a company would want to share and the information is available for everyone to see. Besides that, the backups are centralized. When you upgrade the software you do it centrally so improvements are shared by everyone at once.
Multi user design is a different way of thinking about the way your
organization uses computers. The best bet is to sit down with us and
brainstorm on how we can help your organization.
