InfoPoint uses Solaris and Linux as operating systems for our
servers. Solaris is an Unix operating system and Linux is a copy of
Unix operating system that in most ways is the same.
All of the interfaces to Unix and Linux have been worked out by common
agreement over many years. Though the first versions of Unix were in
the late 60's, the operating system is not "old" in any way. This is
because it still does most of the things it did then, but has evolved
adding functionality over the years. In addition, it is modular so modules
have been improved using the latest technology. Unix works on any 16
bit or greater processor. If a person does not like one version, say
Sun, then they can move to IBM or Linux with little difficulty. It rarely
crashes and is immune to viruses.
We use Windows as clients/terminals to access our Unix systems.
We create our sites in a way that the will work on NT and Windows 2000
systems but we have had serious reliability problems with them.
Our mission statement and our values
dictate that we do the best job we can. Tying our customer in to
a proprietary solution goes against our mission.
